Skinomics vs Roblox Studio and Roblox's AI tools: who actually makes classic shirts from a prompt?

Roblox Studio is free, powerful and full of AI features, but those features are aimed at 3D content. Here is what each one does, and what to use when you just want a classic shirt.

Quick verdict

Use Roblox Studio and its AI tools if you build games, 3D meshes or avatar items on a Windows or Mac computer. According to Roblox's docs, none of them generates classic shirt or pants templates from a prompt, so for a classic outfit on your phone, Skinomics does that job and uploads it for the same 80 Robux fee.

Roblox keeps adding AI to Roblox Studio, so it's a fair question: why use a separate app to make a shirt when Roblox has AI of its own? Lots of players search for a "Roblox AI clothing generator" expecting to find one built right into Studio, and find tools for meshes, materials and rigs instead.

This article is for players and young creators who want to know what Roblox's official tools actually do before deciding where to make clothes. We walk through Roblox Studio, Texture Generator, Material Generator, Assistant and Avatar Setup, explain where classic shirts and pants really come from, and compare all of that with Skinomics, an iPhone and iPad app that generates classic templates from a sentence.

Everything here is based on Roblox's Creator Hub documentation and the App Store as of October 2026. Prices are US prices and can vary by country.

Roblox Studio in a nutshell

Roblox Studio is Roblox's free creation app for Windows and Mac. It's where games, worlds and 3D items such as layered clothing and accessories are built and tested. If you want to make experiences or serious 3D UGC, Studio is the tool, and nothing in this article replaces it.

What it isn't is a phone app, or a one-tap shirt maker. You need a Windows or Mac computer, and Studio is built for building, so a beginner who only wants a new shirt for their avatar may find it a lot to take in.

Roblox's AI tools, and what each one is for

Roblox's AI features are impressive, but look closely at what they produce.

Texture Generator

Texture Generator creates textures for 3D meshes from a text or image prompt. You give it a model, describe the look, and it paints the surface. That's a different thing from a classic shirt, which is a flat 2D template rather than a texture on a mesh. You can read the details in Roblox's Texture Generator documentation.

Material Generator

Material Generator makes tiling materials, the kind of repeating surfaces you'd use for floors, walls or terrain in a game. Useful for builders, not for outfits.

Assistant

Roblox's Assistant can generate meshes, among other help it gives inside Studio. Again, the output is 3D geometry, not a shirt or pants template.

Avatar Setup

Avatar Setup rigs and cages avatar bodies and accessories, the technical steps that make a 3D model move and fit properly on Roblox avatars. It matters a lot for 3D layered clothing and accessories, but it doesn't create classic clothing.

Photo-to-avatar

Roblox's photo-to-avatar APIs are in alpha, so they're still an early, limited feature rather than something most players can rely on.

The bottom line from the docs: none of these tools generates classic shirt or pants templates with AI. They target 3D content.

So where do classic shirts come from?

A classic shirt or pants item is a 585×559 px image (PNG or JPG) laid out on Roblox's template, with panels for the front, back, sides and limbs. You can make that image anywhere: an image editor, a template app, or an AI generator built for the layout. Then you upload it through the Creator Hub, or from inside Skinomics after signing in with your Roblox account.

The upload costs 80 Robux per item, and that fee is generally not refunded if moderation rejects it. Putting the item on sale adds a 10 Robux publishing advance, recoverable through sales, plus account requirements: ID verification (13+ or an ID-verified parent account), 2-step verification and a Roblox Plus or Premium membership.

Studio still has a role here, even for classic clothing: testing in Studio is free. If you have a computer, you can try a template on an avatar there before paying anything. Roblox also warns that many user-made avatar bodies on the Marketplace don't support 2D classic clothing, so it's worth checking how your shirt looks on the body you actually wear.

Where Skinomics fits in

Skinomics fills the gap the docs describe: it generates classic shirt and pants templates from a text prompt. You type or dictate a description (or shuffle the suggestion chips for ideas), pick Shirt or Pants, and send. The design opens on a 3D R15 avatar that you can rotate, zoom and relight, and it's saved to your inventory.

From there, a template editor with a guide overlay lets you draw, add stickers from 16 packs, place shapes, import images and work in layers. When it looks right, you sign in with Roblox and upload from the app, paying the same 80 Robux as any classic upload, or export the PNG to upload yourself.

It has clear limits next to Studio: no 3D layered clothing, no accessories, no meshes, no games. It runs on iPhone and iPad (the App Store also lists it for Apple Silicon Macs and Apple Vision), the interface is in English, and it has 4.5 stars from 42 ratings, a small but early base.

What each option costs

Roblox Studio is free to download and use on Windows and Mac.

Skinomics is free to download. Each AI generation needs either a short rewarded ad or Skinomics Pro, which costs $5.99 a month or $25.99 a year. Reference images are a Pro feature.

Roblox's fees are the same whichever route you take: 80 Robux to upload each classic shirt or pants, plus the 10 Robux publishing advance if you sell it. A shirt and matching pants are two separate uploads.

Making a classic shirt on your phone with Skinomics

  1. Get Skinomics from the App Store on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Type something like "white baseball jersey with blue pinstripes and the number 7", choose Shirt, and send it with Pro or after a short ad.
  3. Check the result on the 3D avatar, then fine-tune it in the editor if needed.
  4. Sign in with your Roblox account and upload from the app (80 Robux), or export the PNG and test it in Studio first.

The Skinomics how-to guide covers each of these steps in more depth.

Who should use what

Roblox Studio and its AI tools are for you if:

  • you're building a game or a world;
  • you make 3D items such as layered clothing or accessories that need rigging and caging;
  • you work on a Windows or Mac computer and want professional tools.

Skinomics is for you if:

  • you want a classic shirt or pants, not a 3D item;
  • you'd rather describe an outfit than draw it;
  • you're on an iPhone or iPad, with or without a computer.

Using both works well, too. Generate a shirt in Skinomics, export the PNG, test it in Studio for free on your computer, and only then upload it.

Verdict

Roblox Studio is the home of Roblox creation, and its AI tools are a real help for 3D work. But according to Roblox's own docs, none of them turns a prompt into a classic shirt or pants template. If that's what you're after, especially on a phone, Skinomics is built for exactly that, and it leaves Studio free for what it does best.

Frequently asked questions

Can Roblox Studio generate a shirt from a text prompt?

Not according to Roblox's documentation. Studio's AI features target 3D meshes, textures, materials and avatar rigging, not classic shirt or pants templates.

Does Roblox have its own AI clothing generator?

Roblox offers Texture Generator, Material Generator, mesh generation in Assistant and Avatar Setup, but none is documented as generating classic 2D clothing. Its photo-to-avatar APIs are still in alpha.

Is Roblox Studio free, and can I use it on a phone?

Studio is free, but it runs on Windows and Mac computers. On an iPhone or iPad, Skinomics is free to download, with each AI design unlocked by a short ad or Pro.

How do I upload a classic shirt without Studio?

Through the Creator Hub, or from inside Skinomics after signing in with your Roblox account. Either way, Roblox charges 80 Robux per shirt or pants.

Can I try a shirt on before paying the 80 Robux fee?

Yes. Testing in Roblox Studio is free, and Skinomics shows every design on a 3D avatar before you upload.

What dimensions does Roblox expect for classic clothing?

Shirts and pants use a 585×559 px template in PNG or JPG. Classic T-shirts are a separate square image, such as 512×512, placed on the front of the torso.

Do Roblox's rules treat AI-made clothes differently?

No specific ban exists for AI-generated clothing. It must follow the Community Standards, the Marketplace Policy and IP rules like any other item, and the uploader is responsible for it.

Is Skinomics an official Roblox app?

No. Skinomics is made by Symaro, LLC and isn't affiliated with or endorsed by Roblox Corporation; it simply uploads through your own Roblox account.

Quick questions from creators

I don't have a computer. Can I still make Roblox clothes?

Yes. Skinomics runs on iPhone and iPad and uploads straight from the app.

Will Texture Generator paint my shirt template?

No. It textures 3D meshes, not 2D classic clothing templates.

Should I learn Studio anyway?

If you want to build games or 3D items, yes. For a classic outfit, you don't need it.

Can Avatar Setup help with my shirt?

Not with classic shirts. It rigs and cages bodies and accessories.

What's Studio good for if I design on my phone?

Free testing: try your template on an avatar in Studio before you pay to upload.
